Magic Potion For My Skin

By Marisa | May 27, 2008

I think I’m going to break down and order my beloved Helichrysum Essential Oil and a large bottle of Emu Oil. Nothing makes my skin feel and look as good as those two simple ingredients.

Actually, I think Heli EO is wonderful for just about anything, from Rosacea to psoriasis treatment. Naturally, if your doctor prescribes medication you should stick with that, but there’s no reason not to give this fantastic EO a try.

If I could own just one Essential Oil ever for the rest of my life, it would be Helichrysum. It’s that wonderful. Pricey, but wonderful.

Boys Are Tough

By Marisa | May 26, 2008

I was looking around the house at my furniture and realized something. When we bought all new furniture in 1993, we had visions of it lasting for several decades. Ha!

It took less than a year for a teenage son to body slam his buddy onto one of the couches, breaking the frame. Over the next several years, the kids put a hurting on virtually every piece of furniture in the house.

My bedroom furniture is still fine and other than the chairs, the dining room furniture is still good. Kids’ beds and dressers, kitchen barstools, living room end tables - all gone and replaced. Boys are hard on furniture.

In 7 years Levi will graduate from high school. In 7 years I will buy all new furniture. And not until.

Old Time Upgrade

By Marisa | May 25, 2008

I had to take a break cleaning my office. I have no idea how I ever packed so much stuff into a 10′x10′ room. Not only do I have three (four with the laptop) computers running in there, each with its own monitor, but I have three computers in various stages of disrepair and enough spare parts to build a couple more.

Oh, and I just found a brand new (as in never used) video card that I don’t even remember buying! I have no idea which computer it was purchased for but I’m pretty sure it was top of the line at the time, although it isn’t now. Still, I think I’ll put it in my old AthlonXP machine and see what happens. I wouldn’t actually spend money to upgrade that machine but since the card is already there, why not?

I wonder what else I’m going to find in that office. Should be fun!

You Used To Be My Baby

By Marisa | May 25, 2008

Oh, wow! I was trying to organize my cleaning process and decided to bring all the plastic crates filled with clothes into one room. I thought it would be easier that way.

Imagine my surprise when I opened one box and found baby clothing! These clothes were not from Kendyll but from Maggie!!

Maggie is 15 now and these clothes are size 12 - 18 months. That means they’re over a dozen years old. Besides being surprised that I’d forgotten about them, I’m amazed that so many of her clothes were in such good condition. I’m also sad that I didn’t find them in time for Kendyll to wear them.

And if you’re wondering, I’m saving them. I may have another granddaughter someday, I just have to remember they’re there!

Say Smile

By Marisa | May 24, 2008

I just realized that when Brian gets home from Hawaii, it will be the first time he sees Maggie’s friend, Amanda without her braces. Brian likes to tease the kids and their friends, good-natured of course, and Amanda was always a good sport (meaning she teased him right back).

Any of the kids’ friends who had braces were teased about their “Cadillac grills” on a Ford front end. I have no idea what that means or how Brian came up with that, but it always got the kids laughing. And yes, the kids tease Brian about his expanding waistline and the gray in his beard, too. It’s all in fun.

I wonder what else will be new around here to Brian and Jesse. I’m sure I’ve forgotten to mention the little things going on and those will add up to something big when they get back.

Landing The Job

By Marisa | May 24, 2008

When I lost my job a few years ago, my husband encouraged me to just take it easy and not look for another job. I’m fortunate that there was no pressure to go job hunting. Several of my friends have had to search for new employment over this past year and it’s obvious that the competition out there is tough. That doesn’t keep me from checking out the job market, though, and keeping my own resume up to date.

From what I’ve read and heard on various TV news shows, the way you present yourself in your cover letter and resume is more important now than ever. When I submitted my resume for my last job, I wrote it myself using a template that came with my Word Document software. Today, that just isn’t good enough. Land That Job

I was going to revamp my resume and rewrite my cover letter so I did a little searching online for some help. I was hoping to find more professional resume templates and some tips on writing my cover letter. I sure found what I needed!

Land that Job provides free samples to download and also a complete resume and cover letter package for just $9.95. What I really like about the site, though, are the helpful articles and tips. There are links to other sites with great tips, too which means I’ve got all the information I need at one site. It’s a nice one-stop type place for preparing for that job hunt.

I’m not ready to start submitting my resume just yet. I may or may not do that this year. I’m still enjoying being a grandma. I just like to keep my options open and my resume ready, just in case. And I’m keeping Land That Job bookmarked, too.

The Apple, The Tree, Falling

By Marisa | May 24, 2008

Why does any kid need more than one gaming system? I don’t get it. The kids still have their Nintendo systems, two or three I think. They’ve got an old PlayStation, a PS2 and a PS3. They have Gameboys and a Gameboy DS as well as two PSPs. But that isn’t enough. They want an xbox 360.

Can you imagine that? Why would anyone need all those game systems? Will someone please explain that to me?

And don’t try to compare it to my four PCs or my 137 shades of eyeshadow or my collection of Vintage Stratton Compacts or my 32 purses and handbags or… Okay, maybe they get it from me.

Follow The Work

By Marisa | May 23, 2008

We all know the real estate market is in turmoil right now. It’s definitely a buyer’s market. With my husband and son returning from Hawaii soon, I’ve been checking out various markets just in case work is still scarce here at home.

One thing I noticed is that people who can’t sell their homes are beginning to offer their homes for rent now. I’ve looked into mostly areas south of here, checking out Nashville, Atlanta and Hilton Head rental units and homes. Looks like things are the same throughout the region.

I don’t know why my husband keeps talking about Tennessee as a place to find construction work. Maybe someone has told him something I don’t know. I’ve never been to Tennessee so that might be an interesting option. Since traveling is one of my passions, this could be a good thing.

The Best Gift

By Marisa | May 23, 2008

The husband and #2 son will be coming home from Hawaii at the end of June. They’ll miss Levi’s 12th birthday but we’ll just have to celebrate over the 4th of July weekend.

On the plus side, they’ll be able to pick up something special for Levi’s birthday instead of the same old stuff from around here. I suggested Jesse head down to the surf shop in Hanalei and pick up some authentic Hawaiian boardshorts and maybe a shark tooth necklace.

On the other hand, all Levi talks about is that his big brother will be coming home soon. Just between us, I think having Jesse home will be the best birthday gift of all.

Beauty Improvements

By Marisa | May 23, 2008

I remember all too well the agony of teenage acne. Back then, the only solution was to try to cover it up. No one knew about (or talked about) non-comedogenic products. The stuff I used to heal and cover my acne actually made it worse.

Today, my daughter is bombarded with choices. Each product carries the claim of being the best acne treatment on the market. The down side is that it makes choosing so difficult. The up side is that most of the products actually do work.

Maggie is trying such a solution right now. I’m hoping it’s the right one for her. If not, it’s back to the drawing board, er… drugstore skin care aisle.
