My Tattoo

Artwork can be sentimental for a variety of reasons. In some cases, the artist is known and loved; other times, the artwork represents a significant moment or place or thought. My favorite artwork encompasses all three.

In February 2001, I had my first and only tattoo. My brother, Chris, offered to draw my tattoo for me when I first mentioned that I'd like to get one. He began working on it when he was in jail and finished the artwork shortly after he was released.

My tattoo is classified as tribal. It is approximately seven inches wide by 5 inches tall. I wear a Superman charm around my neck because the "S" stands for Spank, my nickname. Chris, therefore, incorporated a hidden Superman "S" in the center of the tattoo. The tattoo also has tribal letters spelling out my nickname. I was nineteen when I went to Greg's Tattooing in Elm Grove to have it done.

My tattoo is especially sentimental because my brother drew it and he knows me better than just about anyone. I wasn't sure I wanted a tattoo but when Chris showed me this design I was amazed. It described me so well that I instantly made up my mind that I would have it.

The sentimental value of my tattoo goes both ways though. Chris was very touched that I decided to put his artwork on my body permanently. It's a part of Chris that will always be a part of me. To this day, when I show someone my tattoo, I always seem to add the fact that my brother drew it. It reminds me that Chris was my first friend and has turned out to be my best friend. I think it serves as a reminder to him, as well, that we are brothers and that our relationship is permanent, just like the tattoo. After all, no one else could have drawn a picture that captures who I am better than my brother and no one else could appreciate the importance of that artwork the way that Chris and I do. Only the two of us could ever understand the personal meaning of it all.
