Houseful of Kids
- by Marisa
- February 4, 2007
The way it is: my husband does not like when the kids have friends stay overnight here. I guess it all goes back to the way he was raised and the way I was raised. We had friends stay overnight a lot. We stayed over at friends’ homes. My husband didn’t do that. No sleepovers.
So since he’s in Hawaii, the kids have their friends here. Josh and Cody are here with Boomer and Levi and Amanda is here with Maggie. And I love it. It would be this way every day if that were possible.
The girls and Levi are awake, the other boys are still asleep. Before long, they’ll all be awake, eating cereal and getting ready for the Super Bowl. I’ll have to get Amanda and Josh home during half time, though, since there’s school tomorrow.
Which brings me to my final thought. Shouldn’t the day after the Super Bowl be considered a national holiday? I’d be willing to give up President’s Day or something for it. Shall we start a petition?

The Best Day
- by Marisa
- January 1, 2007
I had to sneak away from the family for just a minute. They’re all gathered in the living room and kitchen, watching the WVU game. It’s the best day ever, win or lose.
All my kids and several of their friends are watching, along with my husband. They’re cheering and yelling and eating wings. I love this. The whole family enjoying some good football is like Heaven to me. This is how it ought to be every day. This is what makes me smile.
I love my family. I love when my family is together. And Boomer just came in and told me to get back to the living room to watch the game.
Life is good.

Shoulda Been A Cowboy
- by Marisa
- December 27, 2006
My husband thinks he was born in the wrong century. He thinks he should have been a cowboy. Yeah, a cowboy from West Virginia. He can watch John Wayne or Clint Eastwood cowboy movies for hours without ever moving. I think it all started with the John Wayne movie “The Cowboys” that Brian saw when he was a kid.
What better gift for a cowboy wannabe than tickets to the Professional Bull Riders World Finals in Las Vegas, Nevada? I know my husband and I know he’d be in all his glory. He used to enjoy the Monster Trucks when they came to town but he lost interest in that. And he hasn’t been to the Tough Man Contest for years. But Bull Riding? Oh, yeah. That’s something he never loses interest in. Being there will be so much better than watching on TV.
I’m looking at tickets in November since that will be near his birthday. Does anyone know which seats would be the best? Let me know if you have some idea. Seems it would be fun to be behind the chute but maybe right across from it would be a better view.
And I was thinking, this is going to be the one event where cowboy boots will be appropriate. Finally! I was really getting tired of seeing him wear those boots with his good suit or his khakis and sports jacket. Now to find that cowboy hat I hid in the back of the closet.

A Giant Christmas Gift
- by Marisa
- December 26, 2006
I think I know what I’d like to give Jesse for Christmas.
Jesse love sports. He played baseball, football and basketball when he was young. He’s kind of a fanatic. And he loves San Fancisco sports most of all. So wouldn’t it be great if he and I met in San Francisco for the Giants Spring Training?
I know Jesse would love some Giants Spring Training tickets. We kind of have ties to the Giants. Joe Pettini, a shortstop for the Giants in the early 80s, grew up right around the corner from us. His parents are still our neighbors. Joe married a friend of mine and their daughter went to school with Jesse. That’s part of the reason Jesse has always loved San Francisco sports teams so much. I’m thinking that if we meet in San Francisco for a game, I could go back to Kauai with Jesse for a few weeks. Wouldn’t that be a great way to bond with my son? Yeah, I thought so, too. The end of March looks like the best time. I’ll have to give Joe a call to ask him about the best seats. Now, I wonder if I should let Jesse know now or surprise him like he surprised me for Christmas.
I think I’ll surprise him
