Our First SupahStar!

  • by Marisa
  • February 10, 2007

The always creative Colleen over at GeekySpeaky has come up with a great new meme that will help introduce all of us to some really terrific bloggers, and generate traffic to all who participate, too. She’s calling it SupahStar Saturday and today is the first installment.

Our very first Supah Star is the amazing Loretta. She’s amazing because she’s still coherent while raising FOUR sons! Since I have 5 sons, I can relate all too well. It’s a major accomplishment to remain sane in a sea of testosterone. And Loretta is not only sane and coherent, she’s quite entertaining.

I love Loretta for appreciating Ozzy and his genius wife Sharon. I’m also thrilled that in her quest to get fit, she’s considering low-carb, my passion. But mostly, I love her wit. I love her attitude. I love her  views on the word housewife.

Ah, yes. Go read about Loretta. She’s perfect for brightening your Saturday.

Kendyll Is Growing Up

  • February 9, 2007

This morning my mom stopped by to bring me my scrip* from the school. She didn’t want to get out of the car so I put Kendyll in her rocker/bouncer/saucer thingy, slipped on my shoes and ran out to the car. When I got back in I glanced over at Kendyll. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

Kendyll was watching the episode of Dora the Explorer where Boots loses his bouncy bouncy ball. (One of my favorite episodes, I might add.) Toward the end, the ball is coming toward the viewer and Boots is telling you to, “Reach out! Catch it! Catch it!” Whenever that comes on, I hold Kendyll’s arms out. Well, there she was sitting/standing in her saucer thingy, reaching her arms out to catch the ball. Every time Boots said, “Catch it.” Kendyll stretched a little more. It was so adorable! I didn’t realize that she was aware of what we were doing.

I know she’s growing up and most likely she’s doing just what every other 1 year old would be doing. But it’s been so long since we’ve had a baby around here so it’s almost like the first time all over again. And of course, she’s my granddaughter, so she’s a genius. :)

*Scrip is like a gift card for various stores. If we use the card that we buy from our school instead of cash, the store gives us back a specific percent of what we spend. The school gets half and we get half to use toward the kids’ tuition.

Girls, Girls, Girls

What do you do with two teenaged girls who are bored? You pull out your manicure/pedicure stuff, hair styling stuff and makeup and have a makeover party.

Maggie, Amanda and I had a wonderful time getting pretty this weekend. They bickered a bit over who would do my French Manicure so I gave one girl the right hand and the other got the left. Both were happy.

And since Maggie has had both a professional manicure and pedicure, she knew about the hand massage and taught Amanda how to do it. Yes, that felt good, especially since my wrist doesn’t like this laptop keyboard lately.

Ahhh, the joy of girls!

A Guy With Attitude

  • by Marisa
  • February 2, 2007

I love a guy with attitude. And a sense of humor is icing on the cake. That’s why I love reading “Jimi Morrison’s” Internet. Serious Business blog.

Okay, so Jimi Morrison isn’t his real name. Doesn’t matter. He’s been participating in online communities via forums for quite a while and his observations are right on point. His instruction on how to have a debate regarding the existance of God is the best I’ve ever seen.

Even when he’s discussing something like the terribly overused LMAO, ROFL et el, he slips in an aside that makes me smile: “I find it hard to believe that anyone actually rolls around on the floor and laughs their ass off. I know I never have and I’ve smoked weed.” And that attitude and humor is all over Jimi’s blog.

So read Internet. Serious Business, bookmark iit, add the feed to your reader. And enjoy.

Fancy Feet

My daughter knows how to make me happy.

Yesterday on the way home from school, she and my mom stopped at Dollar General Market. Maggie showed her gramma a Conair Foot Spa and begged and begged and begged to get it. Finally, my mom relented and bought it. I’m not sure my mom realized it but that Foot Spa was for me!

Maggie brought it in and I was as giddy as a schoolgirl. A FOOT SPA!!! I love pedicures and foot massages. Unfortunately, those can get expensive so a portable foot spa is a great in-between treat.

My girl knows just what her mamma loves. I think this weekend we’ll have a “girl’s night” with manicures, pedicures and hair styles. Wonder if Britanie is up for it, too?

Online Community, Real Life Friends

  • by Marisa
  • January 29, 2007

It’s hard to believe that it’s been eleven years since I first joined this worldwide phenomenon called the internet. Back in 1996, I discovered a parenting site and immediately immersed myself in its forum or “community boards.”

Friendships were forged despite most of us being just a cute username on the screen. Few of us even posted our pictures back then. It was more about connecting with others and sharing our lives and wisdom.

Not much has changed since then.

The whole social networking thing is simply and grandchild of the old boards and forums. It’s still about sharing, getting to know each other, connecting with others. It’s still about people.

It doesn’t matter what your passion is. For me back then, it was parenting. For some it could be movies or scrapbooking. For many, Poker brings the community together.

My son loves the poker communities. He learns about various tournaments and even trades hints and tricks with others. I thought it was really interesting when he mentioned wanting to meet some of the people at the poker forum he frequents. I’ve met online friends so I understand that.

Social networking is not a replacement for real life friendships but it certainly is a supplement to it and in some cases, a stepping stone to real lifetime connections.

Just Wait til You See

My friend Suni did a great graphic of the two of us. She emailed it to me and as soon as I saw it I knew. I knew that it was going to Ted at PayPerPost for his wall of Posties.

Ted needs to reserve a really great spot for this one. I got the frame this evening and the picture will be mailed first thing in the morning. I wonder how long it will take to get to Florida from West Virginia?
