Whose Fab Life?

  • by Marisa
  • August 13, 2007

Even though both of my sisters have more of a formal education in computers than I do, I’m the one who is online all the time and finds all the best sites. After all, the internet is my obsession. Everyone knows that and I think they’re probably okay with me sharing sites that I think they might like.

I ran across a site that made me think of my niece, Stephanie. Steph is beautiful. She’s young and smart and has a great body! She loves makeup and fashion; she enjoys going out and partying. I guess she’s a typically young lady with a great future ahead of her. That’s why I’m sending her a link to HerFabLife - Do You Have aFab Life?

fablifeHerFabLife.com is a great resource for finding all of the trendiest, best restaurants, stores and events. Want to know the latest styles? HerFabLife.com has that. Looking for a spa or hotel? Look no further than HerFabLife.com.

Like all great sites, HerFabLife.com encourages members to participate by submitting articles, voting on the content or voicing an opinion. This site is all about the members and the content is driven by whatever interests the young women who stop by each day.

I can’t wait for Steph to see this site. It reminds me so much of her! Do you know someone who loves keeping up to date on all the hottest styles, places and events? Someone who wants to share what they know with other young women? Then point them to HerFabLife.com. She’ll thank you!

Remember The Drive-In?

  • by Marisa
  • July 23, 2007

My friend Amy mentioned that she and her family went to a drive-in over the weekend. That got some of us reminiscing about a time when drive-ins were spotted throughout the country, in almost every community. Now, it’s tough to find one drive-in within 50 miles. Another of the great dinosaurs, coming close to extinction.

I remember parking in the front row at the drive-in, close enough to the swing set so that my mom could keep an eye on us from the car as we played before the movie began. We’d head to the concession stand for popcorn and drinks to go along with the food that mom packed in the back of the station wagon. Oh, and how I loved that station wagon! We’d put pillows and blankets in the back end, park the car backwards with the tailgate down, and lay in the back watching the movie. Listening was another story, with those awful speakers that hung on a partly opened window.

Yes, as a teen I spent even more time at the drive-in, either with a date or with my friends. In fact, it was 4 of my closest friends and I who went to the drive-in (that is now a tractor supply store site) to watch the x-rated version of Alice In Wonderland. Oh, what fun memories!

The last time I went to the drive-in, I took the kids to see Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. It’s the only drive-in still in this area and it was great to step back in time a little. No more scratchy speakers, now the sound comes in over the radio. Not much else has changed though and that was very comforting.

I think it’s time to make another trip to the drive-in. How about next weekend?

Novel Approach to Promoting A Novel

  • by Marisa
  • March 27, 2007

If you were going to write and publish your first novel, how would you market that book? Would you hire someone to book you on Regis & Kelly? Would you send a copy of your novel to Oprah? Would you do a lot of book signings?

Well, if this was 1978, then you probably would do those things. But this is 2007 and promoting a first novel is much different now. Today you would probably start a website, right? And you’d make sure that your book is available at Amazon.com. Oh, and you’d give the audio version of the book away free, wouldn’t you?

No? Well believe it or not, that is exactly what Author Richard Harris is doing with his very first novel. Honest! If you’re looking for a great mystery/thriller/romance novel then The Capo’s Mistress by Richard Harris will fit the bill. But don’t take my word for it. Take the book for a test run and see for yourself how difficult it is to put this one down.

There are a few chapters to sample at the website but I’d have to recommend the interesting peek into male sexuality in Mike’s first night. It brought a smile to my face although I’m not sure that’s something I ought to admit.

But Richard Harris is offering more than a few chapters of his book to pique your interest. He’s offering the entire novel! Beginning on March 11, Harris began to post his book in MP3 format, one chapter per day. He’s going to continue to post each chapter right up until April 27. On that day, he’ll remove the MP3s and the book will be released at Amazon.com.

Okay, that just seems like a crazy plan to me. Why would Richard Harris let everyone download The Capo’s Mistress for free until April 27? And yet, it’s so crazy that it just may work. I know I’m downloading the chapters and listening to them. I’m not quite to Chapter 3 but I’m already hooked. I guess I’m a sucker for a good mystery and I just love cop stories about organized crime, mobsters and Las Vegas. Maybe that’s why I’m planning on buying the book when it’s released, even if I do make it all the way through the audio book. There’s just something about holding a book in your hands, turning the pages, you know?

So, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and start downloading those chapters. They’re all going to disappear from the website on April 27 so you better get over there now!

The Betsy

Oh, wow! I found a book online today that brought back so many memories. I’m just not sure I should admit this. Okay, but let’s keep it a secret, okay?

When I was younger (like high school age) I got hooked on Harold Robbins novels. My mom called them “trash” but I didn’t care. I loved them! Robbins took me around the world, from Hollywood mansions or New York penthouses to Villas in Italy. I’d stay awake all night reading, anxious for the next adventure or shocking revelation.

When I ran across a copy of The Betsy tonight I almost ordered it. That was the first Harold Robbins book I ever read. But I didn’t order it. My memory of Robbins’ novels are so perfect that I’d rather not read them now as an adult only to find out that I don’t enjoy them as much now. Maybe that’s crazy. Maybe I’ll go back and get the book tomorrow. Maybe.

My Movie Reviewer

  • by Marisa
  • February 28, 2007

I know there are loads of movie reviewers online and on air. Some I agree with sometimes and some never seem to be in line with my thinking. So when I find someone who how writes what I’m thinking about movies, I tend to pay close attention. That’s how it is with Reviews and More, one of the best sites for honest reviews of movies and websites as well as recaps of TV shows.

My daughter Maggie, especially, is always asking for movies. She and her friend Amanda want to rent a movie every weekend but I’m not always sure which movies are appropriate and which are a waste of time. After reading The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants review I’m anxious to get that one for this coming weekend. Both girls have read the book so they’ll probably love the film. I just wish I’d read The Lady in the Water review before I let Maggie talk me into buying it.

But don’t think that I only rent or buy movies for Maggie. Oh, no. After reading the In Her Shoes review, I’m looking for that one at the video store, too. I think I’d had that on my list and then forgot about it.

I usually go straight for the movies reviews at Reviews and More but I think I’ll give some of the other categories a look, too. I’ve been looking for some new and interesting websites to visit and there’s over 80 reviews of those as wells as over 20 “check it out” posts. Looks like there’ll be quite a bit of reading to keep me busy. :)

He Doesn’t Know Everything

I admit, I’m no electrical genius. I’m not a television aficionado. The only reason I’d ever want High Definition TV is for footall. Yeah, that would be nice.

My son, on the other hand, thinks the world is not complete without High Def. I’ve tried to explain that our tiny cable company doesn’t even offer HDTV which prompted the incessant talk of satellite. Sure, that’s what I want.

But just as my son rushed out and bought a living room suite before he even had an apartment to put it, he’s gone out and purchased various accessories like HDMI cable. If he thinks I’m buying him a HDTV for his birthday, he’s going to be very disappointed. Not going to happen!

Where does he get that, anyway? Surely not from his level headed mom! ;)

Scrumptious Blog

  • February 28, 2007

In my travels around the interweb, I often land on blogs that pique my interest. Sometimes I spend more time on one of these blogs than I ought to, leaving the dusting and vacuuming to wait. Usually it’s because I start reading. Today, it was because my hungry belly wouldn’t let me click away.

The photos at TSLdesigns.com blog - Food Category made my mouth water. Okay, I admit that it doesn’t take much more than a picture of ice cream atop a cake for me to salivate; ice cream is my favorite, even though I can’t tolerate the sugar anymore. Still, I can enjoy a picture and reminisce about the day when ice cream was an every day treat.

Naturally, I had to keep looking at the photos; I just couldn’t look away. That’s when I spotted the most sumptious lobster I’d ever seen. Have I ever mentioned how much I love lobster? Two of my kids have requested lobster dinners for their 15th birthday. Both Chris and Boomer share my love of seafood so I was thrilled to introduce them to lobster when they asked. The picture of lobster in the TSL Design Blog brought back such happy memories of those birthday dinners I spent with my sons.

If you’ve been following my blog, you know that I’ve embarked on a personalized low carb eating plan. Besides keeping my carbs low, I’m also eating mostly chicken and other lean meat as well as a lot of green vegetables. I’m not a raw veggie eater other than lettuce so I’m always looking for ways to prepare my greens. So far I’m mostly eating asparagus, green beens, broccoli and spinach. Yesterday I had turnip greens with diced turnips and had to really season it up to get it to taste right.

I hadn’t even considered Kale, although I’ve even it before. But the great photo of green kale topped with shallots, soya sauce and oyster sauce on the TSL Designs Blog had my mouth watering. And a light bulb went off, too. Why not add Kale to my menu? And that got me thinking about Dandelion Greens, which I hadn’t had for over 3 decades! It’s getting to be that season again so I’ll have to make a point of picking some in the spring.

I’m going to keep checking back at TSL Designs Blog for other food ideas. Just looking through these pictures have given me ideas for interesting, healthy menu additions here at home. Can’t wait to see what other pictures of scrumtious food pop up here!

So Few Uplifting Films

  • by Marisa
  • February 24, 2007

There have been only a handful of films that have left me feeling hopeful and really good about humanity. Schindler’s List was one of them. Most of the time, though, film are either purely for fun or are downright disturbing. I won’t name the ones that I find absolutely offensive and a waste of time. That isn’t what this is about.

This is about finding a film that makes you feel better. In fact, it may actually make you feel like there’s hope for tomorrow and that each of us can make a difference. This film has already begun to do that in a small way and will now be ablet to do that on a much larger scale.

The Ultimate Gift began it’s life as a little book about giving. The movie, too, began small. After a few hundred pre-screenings, several million dollars have been raised for various charities. A teen group dedicated to giving, Show Of Hands has even been started based on this film.

But “small” often means low budget and that’s what has kept The Ultimate Gift from being released nationwide. Until now, that is. 20th Century Fox was so impressed with the message of this film that they are releasing it to 800 theaters around the country beginning March 9.

This is the official site of the movie”The Ultimate Gift” and the grass-roots movement its starting to help charities and give to others. Be sure to learn about the Weekend of Giving taking place during the national release of the film.

If you’re tired of movies that demean or degrade, that leave you feeling empty and hopeless or that simply don’t reflect the values that you embrace, please consider marking the weekend of March 9 for the premier of this film and then joining in one of the grass roots campaigns for giving.

I’ve been waiting for something like this to come around. It’s finally here and I know I won’t miss it.

Poor Britney!

  • by Marisa
  • February 19, 2007

Maybe it’s because Britney Spears is about the age of one of my sons, but I’m feeling really bad for her right now. She doesn’t need someone to party with or clean up her mistakes. She needs her mom.

Hey, Britney’s mom, where are you?

I know Britney is an adult. She’s a mother as well. Nevertheless, someone needs to get that girl to see what she’s doing. Someone needs to be brutally honest with her. Someone needs to point out that her sons already have one parent who’s a waste; she can’t let them down, too.

I happen to like Britney Spears. I don’t like when people bash her. I don’t like seeing her destroy herself, either. She needs to understand that she must learn to love herself. Everything she’s doing right now reflects some real hatred for who she is.

Come on, Britney! You’re pretty, talented and have a heart of gold. Get it together for yourself and those great sons.
