Hello High Speed

YAY!!!! In preparation for the high definition cable that we’ll be getting next year, my cable company will be rolling out cable internet in the next month or so. I am so happy!

I’ve suffered through Verizon’s hideous DSL for way too long. I’ve gotten headaches trying to maneuver through their phone system to get to tech support people who barely speak English. I know my cable company because they’re located right here, just a few miles from my home. I know the people who work in the office. I know I can understand them.

Now I have to prepare for the switch. I’ve been pricing HDTVs, blue-ray devices and HDMI cables. I’m looking around my living room for the perfect place for my new gear. Mostly, though, I’ll just be so happy to get rid of this awful DSL.

Win A Wii And Place A Bid At Charter

Way back when I was working my very first job, I spent some of my paycheck on a video game console. I got a discount at the store where I worked so I thought I was getting quite a bargain. Keep in mind that I’m approaching the half century mark and you should be able to guess the name of that first video game. Yes, it was the original Pong.

I don’t play video games now and haven’t since my days of Ms. PacMan at the local bar and PitFall on my older kids’ ancient Nintendo. My kids, though, love all video games and still have the older consoles hooked up to TV’s throughout the house as well as one at my mother’s house. The game system they’ve been wanting, though, is the Wii. So far, they haven’t gotten that one but things might just change. It looks like Charter Communications is giving away one awesome Nintendo Wii system and by “system” I mean it comes complete with everything you could possibly need to start playing.

Besides the console, Charter is giving away a Wii Stand, 5 Sports games (Boxing, Baseball, Tennis, Golf and bowling), a Remote Controller, a Nunchuk Controller, a Sensor Bar, a Wii AC Adapter and a Wii AV Cable. Can you imagine that? My kids would be drooling over this package. And it’s up for grabs! All you have to do is Click Here for a Chance to Win a Nintendo® Wii™!

But wait! There’s more! While you’re visiting the Charter site, be sure to enter your bid for free high speed internet access for life. Yes, you read that right. Charter is auctioning off internet access for life. That’s forever. And the bids start at just $10!

The bidding won’t officially start until March 12 but you can pre-register right now. Seriously, this is a great chance to get high speed internet access at a price that you name. Just think of what you could do with the money you won’t have to be paying for internet access every month.

I’m not eligible for the internet access since Charter doesn’t service my neighborhood, but I sure hope someone who reads about the auction here wins it. If you do, be sure to stop back and let me know!

Just A Phone Call Away

KauaiAnyone who has followed my blog for any length of time knows that I have a son currently living in Hawaii. Specifically, he’s on the north shore of the island of Kauai, in Kilauea. To say that it’s a beautiful place would be an understatement. I fell in love with Kauai in 2001 on my first visit and I love it still.

I’m so happy that Jesse’s been able to stay in Hawaii and work. He really does love it there. It’s just that I really miss him. Yes, I have five other children. Still, with one so far away, there’s just always a little ache in my heart. It wouldn’t be quite so bad if we had a way to talk to each other more often. but all we have are our cell phones and reception on the north shore of Kauai is worse than it is here in the hills of West Virginia – and that’s saying a lot!

KauaiGranted, the lush greenery, the majestic mountain in the center of the island, the valley where Jesse’s house is located, all make for a paradise setting. And they also make cell phone reception unbearable! Every conversation takes about 5 or 6 redials – yes, we get cut off that often.

What’s the answer? Well, after some research it seems that the best way to stabilize our cell phone reception is to invest in a portable cell phone booster. This device not only boosts signal strength but it also reduces disconnects and extends battery life. Can you imagine how much better Jesse’s signal will be with one of these? We’ll be able to talk anytime we want! Just look at these test results:

amp test

KauaiNot only does it operate on AC at home, but it can also switch to DC power for use in the car with a cigarette lighter. That makes it an excellent bargain since there are a number of beaches that we enjoy there with an even weaker signal than Jesse gets at his house. It’s really kind of frightening to be near the water with no way to call for emergency services; the portable cell phone booster isn’t simply convenient, it’s a potential life saver, too.

The more I read about this signal booster, the more I know it would be perfect for Jesse in Hawaii. It comes with a protective case and according to the directions on the website, it looks like it would be snap to set up.

KauaiJesse has been in Hawaii since 2005. We’ve spent three of his birthdays and one Christmas apart. I’ve been fortunate to have visited him a few times each year, even bringing his baby niece with us last March, but it just isn’t the same. As much as I love having a reason to travel to Hawaii, I would much rather have my son home. That probably won’t happen this year, but I think I’ve found a way to bring him a little closer. Well, to bring his voice closer, at least.

It’s kind of odd to view an electronics product in such an emotional way. I guess you’d have to be a mom with a child almost 5000 miles from home to understand. All I know is that Jesse’s phone calls are usually one of the best parts of my day. This signal booster can make those calls even better.

So Many Free Ringtones, So Little Time!

When we got our first cell phone back in 1990 my husband’s phone was attached to his truck. It was big and clunky and we were just thrilled to have it. Today, it’s all about how small it is, how much it can do. In total, our family has 5 cell phones on our plan. My husband and I are mostly concerned about reception and prices. My kids, on the other hand, are interested in bells and whistles. The more the phone can do, the happier they are.

Free RingtonesWe’ve put limits on what the kids can add to their because of the cost. An important word around here is “free” and the kids know to be on the lookout for that. That’s why I just showed Maggie this site with Free Ringtones and she’s busy now going through the list of artists. I think I’m now her favorite Mother!

I admit I’ve never been one to play around with ringtones but with over 1300 to choose from, I just had to take a look around. I figured there’d be loads of selections from current hits; I never imagined I’d find Black Sabbath’s Iron Man there! Naturally, I had to download that one and then I saw AC DC and grabbed Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, too. I really need to take my time and look through all of these. I’m searching by artist right now but Maggie prefers to search by genre. That’s nice that we get a choice.

I know Boomer is going to love this, too. He’s at gramma’s house tonight so he’s missing out on all the ringtone fun. And you know, I just discovered that they even have a section for TV show theme songs. I never knew you could get something like that. I just downloaded the theme from Law & Order. That one is going to be great!

Now, I’m sharing this with all of you but you have to promise not to tell the kids that mom is actually enjoying this free ringtone thing. They think I’m all about function and it would ruin my image if they knew I was having fun with my cell phone. Keep my secret, okay?

I Need Cell Phone Reviews

Boomer and I have the same cell phone model; we both hate it. We’ve been talking about replacing these garbage phones but the choices are overwhelming. We need a site dependable cell phone reviews so that we don’t regret our purchase the next day or the next month.

Right now, the biggest question I’m facing is whether to stick with a Motorola phone or go back to an LG. Even though the Motorola is very tempting, my old LG lasted longer than any other phone I’d ever had. I’m just so torn on this one. I tend to keep phones for quite a while and really hate trading them in. I hate re-learning how to use a new phone. That’s why my choice now is so important. I have to live with this decision for a few years, at least.

I guess I could let Boomer decide. He’d probably like that. Yeah, maybe that’s what I’ll do.

Fix My Computer!

GrumbleGrumbleGrumble

My laptop won’t boot up. That really irritates me because I like to sit in my bedroom and surf online while I watch the TV out of the corner of my eye. Yes, I do multi-task despite my inability to remember beyond the past 10 minutes.

The only thing I did to my laptop yesterday was install the Alexa toolbar in IE7. Could that be it? Of course! I wouldn’t have installed it at all but sometimes I open IE7 for certain sites and if I need to go to my website, then I may not use FF. Afterall, IE7 has tabs. But I do want Alexa to count my visit. So I installed.

Big Mistake.

My FF plugin with Alexa works fine so I won’t blame Alexa entirely. I’m sure it’s partly IE, too. Maybe mostly. Anyway, now I have to troubleshoot the darn thing. I’ve dug out my repair CDs, my utility loaded jump drive and the Windows XP CD. Now I need to make another pot of Coffee and try to get this thing running before Kendyll wakes up.

One try then I’m putting it off till tomorrow. Not much patience today.

Bargain Shopping With Ebates

I am always looking for ways to save money. I figure most other people are, too. I mean, why not get the best deals possible, right?

Ebates is a sure-fire way to save money online. And as with all great bargains, signing up at Ebates is free. Once you’re a member there, simply shop through the Ebates site to receive up to 25% cash back.

Just look at the Ebates Apple store. Whether you’re looking for one of the iPods, like nano or shuffle, or a Macbook or Apple mini, you’ll find it here along with the best specials and coupons around.

Ebates is the only site I know of that passes the sales commissions from its partners on to its members-shoppers. That’s you. I can’t imagine shopping any other way.

Electronics Madness

I don’t know why it is, but every mp3 player we have around here needs new earbuds. Seems the ones that come with the mp3 player just don’t last.

If they were all the same brand I’d think that was the problem. But we have 2 iRiver, 2 Sandisk and one Panasonic. We have one set of original working earbuds and that’s probably because I don’t use my iRiver very often.

So I’ve been looking for new earbuds at a reasonable price. One of the best sites I’ve found so far is Your Electronic Warehouse. Besides that fact that the prices are great, they have such a wide variety of electronic products that it makes shopping so much streamlined.

That’s why I’m also very inerested in their camcorders. My daughter has been wanting a new one and I really like a couple of the ones I saw there.

Now, I know there are more important things for my son Nick to purchase for his new apartment but when I saw the in-ceiling and in-wall speakers, I just had to let him know about them. His eyes lit up and he practically pushed me away from my own computer! I guess I know what I’m going to buy him for his birthday!

It’s no wonder Your Electronics Warehouse has been named Monster Cable’s E-Commerce Retailer of the year. I know my family and I are hooked on it after just one visit!
