Marisa's Dandelion Patch

My husband, Brian

Decades. Not years anymore, but decades. It's still amazing to me. This man, the father of all these kids, came into my life when I wasn't really looking for anyone and he's stuck around all this time. Amazing.

Marriage is a crap shoot. No matter what your intentions, you don't know if it's going to last. You don't know how you'll change, how your spouse will change, or if either of you will adapt to those changes. And we do all change.

Over the years I've wondered about our marriage and how we've stayed together. Like all marriages, we've had our ups and downs. We used to tell the kids that we agreed a long time ago that whoever leaves has to take the kids; neither of us has left because neither of us wants the kids. (I thought that was funny; the kids did not.) I've come to realize that Brian and I understand each other. We both need time alone; we're both very jealous at times. Maybe it's because we're both Scorpios. I don't know.

We're also very different. I'm short, dark hair and eyes, Italian. He's a foot taller, blue eyes, dark blonde hair, German and Scotch. He likes fishing, yard work, nature shows, westerns, stupid comedies, being outside...I don't. Once, more than a dozen years ago, we appeared on a Pittsburgh talk show for the episode, "Opposites Attract." It was a lighthearted show, not one of those tell-all scandalous ones. It was fun. We watch the tape sometimes and it becomes more evident how different we are.

Still, we understand each other.

Brian is a brick layer by trade but can build a house from start to finish. He allows people to think he's dumb but he's smarter than anyone realizes. He works long hours and even when he complains about it, that's the way he prefers it.

And although he is two years older than I am, he has not one gray hair on his full head of hair! Yes, this bothers me.
