Island Cruisin’

My kids are so lucky to have such a smart mom. No, really. They present me with a dilemma and I offer a suggestion that they love. Okay, so maybe it doesn’t happen all the time but it happened today. So I’m feeling like a pretty smart mom right now.

Jesse has a car here at home and isn’t quite sure he wants it shipped to Hawaii. It’s a Honda S2000 in perfect condition but he isn’t sure if the sea air will be too hard on the exterior. Besides, the cost of living is high on the island and he’s trying to save money so he only drives when he absolutely must. Otherwise, he walks. So I suggested that since he’s just down the road from Anini beach, and minutes from work, his best bet may be to look into beach cruisers.

Jesse is very athletic and when I mentioned this to him, he seemed surprised that I’d come up with such a good idea. I told Jesse that the Cruiser Style website had a number of really nice bikes and that they accept PayPal as well as his credit card. I really like the XYZ line but they carry GreenLine as well.

Jesse’s getting his internet access hooked up this weekend so I’m sending him the URL so he can look over the bikes himself. In fact, I’m going to suggest that he get two bikes so I’ll have one to ride when I come to visit. I’d much rather bike down to the beach than drive, anyway. After all, I gave him the great suggestion, right?

  1. What a great idea, and healthy. Does it mean the bike has special tires for the sand? I remember walking the beach and the sand causing friction on the shoes..what would it do to the bike. Anyway for work and everyday I think you came up with a grand idea.

In response to Dorothy, yes, a cruiser bike sits high from riding on 28-32 inch wheels that have a nice rounded tires that allow the bike to grip sanded paths as well as riding smoothly directly on the beach itself. I grew up as a BMX kid, a hobby my mother painfully lived through(got worse when I traded the bike for skates)When I moved to hawaii with my fiance, we decided to only ship one car over to the big island. And since, her car was technically worth more than my truck we sold mine to ship hers. Once we got their and learned the hard way about cost of living and employment our only option was for me to get a bicycle. Since we lived out of Kona bout twenty something miles it seemed I got the short end of the stick. We also lived at the bottom of a four mile hill. The first two days of riding to work (the hill alone took an hour) I thought I was going to die. But the third day I decided to hitchike up with my bike (when in rome right..?) After that, the old man was there everyday to ride my bike up the hill in the back of his truck and smoke a morning cig with me. From the top of the hill the 20 miles into town wasnt as bad, and by the end of the week I was doing the whole ride in 30-40 minutes. I enjoyed it very much and it really improved my health and my physique. It was a very enjoyable time in my life, one that I will always remember fondly. My only advice is, if perchance you son does ride outside of the town, that he get a helmet. Other than the regular safty reasons, most highways on the island are two lane with a minimal shoulder and often very curvy. I cannot count the amount of times I almost got hit and I would not like to return to see bad news on this blog.
I hope he enjoys the riding as much as I did.

    Tommy.
