Kennedy Endorses Obama

The only surviving child of President John F. Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, has come out in support of Barack Obama.

In an op-ed piece scheduled for tomorrow’s Sunday New York Times, Kennedy endorses Obama as a man who can inspire this generation of voters the way her father inspired previous generations. I know Oprah is important but in the world of politics, I doubt you can get much better than Caroline Kennedy.

I’m not terribly happy with Democrats or Republicans. I call myself a Libertarian because that’s closest to my beliefs. I’ve also come to the conclusion that there will never be a candidate with whom I agree on most issues. My grandmother, however, was a Kennedy Democrat - except that she didn’t like Teddy - and she passed on to me a respect for the former President and great admiration for Jackie. I guess I hold Caroline in high esteem based on her parents.

Anyway, two thoughts came to mind as I read Caroline’s op-ed piece. First, I wonder how women who lambasted Oprah for endorsing a man instead of a woman are going to respond to this. Might this take the negative attention away from Oprah? Will her endorsement be bolstered, validated even, with Caroline Kennedy speaking up?

Second, check out the last paragraph of Caroline’s essay.

I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them. But for the first time, I believe I have found the man who could be that president — not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans.

Not only has Caroline Kennedy chosen to back Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton, but that final paragraph is a shot at former President Bill Clinton. Damn.

Just damn.

  • Great quote you’ve pulled there. I generally count myself a Libertarian too. Voted for Harry Brown in 2000.

Just curious what do you think of Ron Paul (ran Libertarian in 1988).

I’m not a Ron Paul supporter myself, still completely undecided other than that I do not like Hillary and I do not like Huckabee, and still mad at McCain.

  • I can’t put my finger on it but Ron Paul makes me uncomfortable, though not in the same creepy way that Romney does. Huckabee is shifty. Or something. Hillary is just more of what’s wrong in DC.

Why are you mad at McCain? I’ve liked him for a long time, mostly because he speaks his mind. Same with Joe Lieberman. I like when they butt heads with their own party.

I really have no idea who to support. When it all comes down to the general election, it will once again be the lesser of two evils I’m afraid.

  • Back in 2000, when McCain was getting bashed by Bush in South Carolina, McCain eventually caved on the issue of the Confederate flag. He later apologized for it, but after that he did quite a lot to support President Bush and the administration. (He did a lot of things to attack Bush or disagree, but it always seemed to be within some acceptable guideline as if there were a tacit agreement among Republicans that if McCain sucked it up and didn’t get TOO loud, then he would get to be President some day.

That was the impression I got at the time and it seems to be consistent even today.

I do understand the need to be politically expedient at times, but from a person that promised to be honest and straight talk this seems to be much less than honest and straight with the public and his supporters.

Bottom line my trust in him was shaken pretty seriously.

  • Very nice post on Caroline Kennedy’s support of Obama. I do recall when her Dad died. She was a young girl so it is likely she did not remember much.

I am not certain that I could back Obama. He has made a few comments (Please don’t ask me right now. I don’t remember them. It’s late.) that did not sit well with me at all. That was when I watched the big debate with all major candidates participating.

And John Edwards is not doing so great but I would have backed him long before I would back Hillary and Obama. There were a couple of things he said at the debate that weren’t so hot but not as bad as what Obama and Hillary said.

Hillary is a no-show and obnoxious as far as I am concerned. I, frankly, cannot see voting for a female simply because I’m female. And, I have to tell you, I live in Arkansas and had enough of Hillary when she lived here. Good luck, New York. One Clinton in the White House was more than we needed before.

Ron Paul strikes me as being a lot like Ross Perot, not quite what the country needs. He can’t stand up to some of the things needed for the White House. I have no confidence in him at all.

John McCain does have his moments but I do like him for a possibility. He really has a handle on the middle east situation that some of the others do not.

I think Mike Huckabee is good for the country. I do not understand why you call him shifty. He is certainly more honest than Hillary has ever been. He did a lot for Arkansas as a governor. I did not agree with absolutely everything he did but for the most part, he was great for our state.

Fred Thompson would make an excellent Vice President. I was sorry to hear that he dropped out. There should have been more support for him.

Guiliani scares me. I thought he was great during the 911 thing but after that….yikes! I hope I never see Romney get near the nomination.

Guess I’m finished expounding on my choices. I have not decided either. I vote independent.

  • You’ve given me a lot to think about, Jaz. Especially interesting hearing your opinion of Huckabee, since you’re from Arkansas. Thanks!

  • Wouldn’t you know it, the rest of the Kennedy clan got on board. Not a surprise. I am not a fan of Ted Kennedy ever since the questionable car crash that killed that young lady some years ago. I think he got out of that pretty slickly. To me, that makes him dishonest at the very least.

  • Same here. Ted got away with (at the least) vehicular homicide. I think he wrecked because he was drunk and probably driving too fast for road conditions. Regardless, he was a coward and always will be in my mind.

I still think Caroline is significant since she really hasn’t been a loud voice in the political world, unlike Teddy who just won’t go away.

  • Caroline is a sharp one. Her “new generation of Americans” quote is a direct throwback to her dad’s Passing the Torch speech, too — nice touch. But I don’t like Obama very much. Come to think of it, I don’t like any of my choices very much.

As for the Oprah Factor, I think the Kennedy name trumps that and gives her the currency to endorse whomever she wants.

  • Didn’t catch the throwback but I agree with you. I’m not excited about any of the candidates right now. Of course, Teddy is reportedly endorsing Obama, with an announcement due today. I don’t see that as a good thing for Obama, but then, I’ve already mentioned that I don’t like Teddy.

I’d vote for Caroline, no matter what her views. I just like her.

  • Wake up mainstream media. Not all the Kennedy family is supporting Obama. Please remember about fair and balanced reporting and at least acknowledge the other Kennedys who are endorsing Clinton. If all the Kennedys are not going in the same direction then you cannot use the term ‘Kennedy Dynasty’ as supporting Obama.

  • Thanks for that link, Terry. I hadn’t heard that Kathleen, Bobby and Kerri were supporting Hillary. Interesting.

  • Marisa, this was a great post, I’m just back from ovarian cancer surgery and you already got my mind reeling. I was very disturbed when I heard the endorsements yesterday.

The pickings are slim..my vote is still wavering, however, because of Hillary’s devotion to health care reform…I think she’s the one. I also think she needs to do a good job, just to set the record straight..Been reeling since my cancer news I’ll catch up and comment more.. Regarding Obama..he’s still too darn inexperienced.
