Makin’ Bacon

By Marisa | November 11, 2007

When I was growing up, we didn’t usually do big breakfasts. Sometimes we’d have breakfast for supper, which I always loved, but in the morning we ate light. I know every family is different and that was quite apparent when I married my husband. His family did the whole bacon, eggs, home fries, toast and jelly for breakfast. Just the thought of all that food so early in the morning makes my stomach a little queasy.

Over the years, mostly because I didn’t cook in the morning, my husband learned to eat light in the morning. All my kids are the same. Our typical morning fare is cereal and fruit. Well, except for weekends, that is. Weekends are slow and lazy since there’s no rush to get out the door for work or school buses. And so, somewhere around 11am, we have a hearty breakfast. I think that would be called “brunch” since it usually runs right into noon, though. With such a large family, the preparation is time consuming and messy.

The mess I hate most is cooking bacon. For one thing, it always splatters and burns me. Not sometimes, but every.single.time. For another, if you cook it on a high heat, it splatters more and usually burns; if you cook it on lower heat, it takes forever. I love bacon but I hate cooking it. My family loves bacon, too, so I have to cook it. Usually, that means two frying pans going at once because my family can eat two pounds of bacon at one time, especially if the kids who don’t live at home show up with their significant others.

Keep in mind that I’ve tried various methods of cooking bacon, like the broiler or the microwave, but the husband and kids complained about the texture. Perhaps that is why my husband scoffed as he watched me preparing to cook bacon using my new microwave bacon cooker. I never let on that I wasn’t even sure if it would work or not. I just kept hoping that the website was accurate when it said that it would cook “crispy” bacon in the microwave, without a mess.

Luckily, the instructions that come with the cooker are really easy to understand and the website has an excellent FAQ that I’d already read. I got my first batch of bacon loaded onto the vanes and into the microwave quickly. While the instructions give a time of 3 minutes for 6 strips, I opted for 2 minutes to test how my oven works with the cooker. The bacon did, in fact, need more time but I found 2 min. and 30 seconds or so to work better with my microwave.

I was able to easily remove the bacon from the cooker, discard the grease in the cup and make another batch, all with no mess. The real test, though, was whether my husband approved of the bacon or not. He looked it over and admitted it looked pretty good. He took one strip and tasted it. His words, “Heh, that really worked. Good job.” Then he piled the other 5 strips on his plate.

I know that kids can be picky eaters but none of my kids are as picky as my husband. (Don’t tell him I said that!) The fact that he approved the bacon that came from my new cooker is huge. It means that this first and only (as far as I know) totally contained microwave bacon cooker is going to make my weekends so much better. Not only did it cook the bacon perfectly but the clean up was a snap. The whole thing goes right into the dishwasher!

If you check out the website, be sure to note the special offer if you choose to buy two of these. I can see where two would really help in a larger family so that you can be loading the bacon on one while the other is in the microwave cooking. I’m probably going to order two more, keep one and give one to my mom. I also want to point out that unlike some TV offers, you can see right up front how much it will cost you to order two cookers. You save $5 off the price while the shipping remains the same. I fell for a TV special on a different product once that said you could order two for the price of one plus additional shipping. The shipping was more than the cost of the item! I knew immediately that the people behind the CrispyClean® Bacon Broiler were on the up and up when they didn’t try to slap me with outrageous shipping charges.

Reputable company, excellent product! What more could you want?

What a great review, Marisa! I can tell that I’m going to have to order one of these for my mother who is a gadget-aholic as well as a bacon lover! Thanks for the tip!

Great review! I hate the mess that goes along with cooking bacon. I ended up buying the precooked stuff most the time, because I couldn’t stand the mess. Great to know, thx
