The Truth About Pit Bulls

A very long time ago, back when my dad was a kid, the American Pit Bull Terrier was the most popular dog for families with children. No, really. It’s true. In fact, they were known as the “babysitter” or “nanny” dog. That’s because Pit Bulls are really very gentle with kids.

I know. I know. You’ve heard the TV reports or read the newspaper articles or know a friend of a friend of your cousin’s husband’s sister or maybe you actually watched a Pit Bull tear apart a small child. Whatever. For one thing, if it was a Pit Bull, it was not behaving according to the breed’s nature and for another thing, was it really a Pit Bull? Because there are over 20 breeds of dog that are mistaken for Pit Bulls.

Regardless, this post isn’t about trying to convince people who prefer the sensational over the truth. This post is about one Pit Bull: my beautiful Bella Donna aka Belle. She used to belong to my son Jesse and me. He picked her out, I paid for her. We both have loved her. But Belle has decided that she belongs to Kendyll. Belle loves Kendyll just as much as every human in our family.

I’ve been around dogs all my life and I know that some dogs are food aggressive and some are not. Belle is definitely not food aggressive. Whenever Belle eats, Kendyll likes to sit by the dog dish, scoop up food in her hand and watch as Belle eats the food from her hand. I usually just sit and watch, totally amazed at how the dog and the baby have devised this little game.

The other game they play is that Kendyll runs to the kitchen and points to the dog biscuits. I hand her one, Belle sits patiently and waits until Kendyll puts out for Belle to take. Kendyll claps and points for another biscuit. And another. Until I hide the biscuits and tell her “all gone.” I really think Kendyll and Belle are in cahoots against me.

But this biscuit game has changed recently. Now, Kendyll takes a few bites of the biscuit first, before handing it to Belle. She didn’t do this once or twice. She does it with every biscuit. And Belle just sits and waits until she hands it to her. The dog is patient, that’s for sure. Of course, Kendyll has always shared her food with Belle so perhaps Belle is now returning the favor. Here, then, is the vicious Pit Bull waiting for the grandbaby to share the dog biscuit.

  • I have always been conflicted about the issue of pit bulls
    and regulation.
If they could enforce a law that said ‘Don’t be an idiot,’
there are a lot of things that I would like the non-idiots
to be free to enjoy. The truth is, there is a big difference
in the potential for harm between this type of dog and others.

  • Very nice story. I too think pits bulls have received a bad rap, I have raised larger breed dogs for a good number of years, and any dog, regardless of its breed responds to its environment. If you treat them with TLC, they will return it 100 fold.
