Reason To Have Kids #214

Of course I love my kids. There are many days that I don’t regret having them at all. And there are days when I’d like to run away! Okay, those days don’t come that often but they do exist.
One interesting lesson I’ve learned is that as a kid progresses to each new stage, no matter how anxious you were for the kid to get there, you will find yourself wishing that you could go back to the previous stage. You know, like when you finally get the kid potty trained and you’re celebrating no more diapers, then you walk into the mall and your toddler in underpants says, “I have to go. NOW!” As you’re sprinting through the mall, 30 lb toddler in your aching arms, you’re really wishing the kid was wearing a diaper.
Adolescence is the same way. You can’t wait for it but when it arrives, you wonder why you thought your kid’s teenage years were going to be better than your own. And yet, there are some very nice moments during adolescence. For example, a teenager today might just enjoy the same music that you do. The best concerts I ever attended were the ones with my kids. Yes, my teens. We’ve been to three or four and one son just asked me recently about finding def leppard concert tickets for him and his friends. When he saw that I was interested, he said that if I drove, he’d pay for my ticket! Can’t beat that, except that they’re traveling to Hershey PA for the concert and that’s just a bit too far for me.
Anyway. All in all, having kids is good. I just need to remember to enjoy the stage they’re in, and enjoy each moment with them.
