Happy Birthday Baby Boy

nick birthI’ve been thinking about this post all day. My son, Nick, is 19 today and just saying a quick “Happy Birthday” just doesn’t seem like enough. Besides being a Leo (I have two of them in this house!) he’s also unlike any child I’ve ever known. He’s just… different. He’s fearless. He lives fast and hard. He lived more in his first 14 years than some people live in a lifetime. He always told me he’d make me a grandma first and he was right.

We knew Nick was different from the beginning, really. The first thing everyone noticed about Nick when he was born was his dimple. And then his bright smile and the twinkle in his eyes. Seriously, his eyes twinkle. And he’s always doing whatever he needs to do to get attention. With two older brothers, two younger brothers and a younger sister, Nick had to do quite a bit to stand out and get attention. One surefire way, he discovered, was with his quirky fashion sense. Yes, my Nick has a style all his own. :)

pregnantRather than going on and on about this, how about I show you some pictures? I’ll scale them down here but do click on them to see them full size. Nick would love to know you all looked at his pictures. Remember, he’s a Leo. Even embarrassing photos are better than no photos.

Okay, first up, pre-Nick. I have exactly two pictures of me pregnant. One with Jesse and this one with Nick. I had exploded with Nick so getting a side view seemed to be everyone’s goal. After much begging, I posed. The question remains, WHY did I pose? Yikes! Oh, and keep in mind that this was 1988. Big hair was still going strong around here.

But I told you that Nick had a certain flair about him, didn’t I? Well, hold on to your seats. Here are just a few of Nick’s “best dressed” photos. Again, all are clickable.

Cool! Except for the shades, this is one of the only “normal” pictures of Nick.

Yes, he’s wearing a pair of panty hose over top of his clothes. Yes, he thinks this looks just grand. Notice the joy in the face.

Underoos were never meant to be hidden. And so Nick, proud of his big boy pants, decided to wear them on the outside of his clothes. Again, he’s quite proud of this new fashion discovery.

A “brief” fashion faux pas. Pun intended.

No clue. Really.

Nick and his cousin Jake thought they were ninjas. This is a perfect example of how Nick always took “getting into character” a step further than any other child. Before he could play, he had to find a ski mask to complete his outfit.

Yes, that’s my boy. He doesn’t wear his Underoos on his head or over his jeans anymore, at least not in public. And I haven’t seen him in panty hose for months. But he’s still my Nick, a little quirky, very outspoken, and not afraid of much at all. Oh, and I mustn’t forget, for a guy so young, he’s really stepped up to the plate as a daddy. Not many 17 year olds handle parenthood like Nick has. He’s a great father. But he’s still my little boy, too.
