My friend Amy mentioned that she and her family went to a drive-in over the weekend. That got some of us reminiscing about a time when drive-ins were spotted throughout the country, in almost every community. Now, it’s tough to find one drive-in within 50 miles. Another of the great dinosaurs, coming close to extinction.
I remember parking in the front row at the drive-in, close enough to the swing set so that my mom could keep an eye on us from the car as we played before the movie began. We’d head to the concession stand for popcorn and drinks to go along with the food that mom packed in the back of the station wagon. Oh, and how I loved that station wagon! We’d put pillows and blankets in the back end, park the car backwards with the tailgate down, and lay in the back watching the movie. Listening was another story, with those awful speakers that hung on a partly opened window.
Yes, as a teen I spent even more time at the drive-in, either with a date or with my friends. In fact, it was 4 of my closest friends and I who went to the drive-in (that is now a tractor supply store site) to watch the x-rated version of Alice In Wonderland. Oh, what fun memories!
The last time I went to the drive-in, I took the kids to see Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. It’s the only drive-in still in this area and it was great to step back in time a little. No more scratchy speakers, now the sound comes in over the radio. Not much else has changed though and that was very comforting.
I think it’s time to make another trip to the drive-in. How about next weekend?

We have a drive-in theater about 10 miles from my house. This is the first year we haven’t been there in a while.
It is always so crowded, people are honking their horns, tapping on their brakes, turning on their signal lights, and flashing their headlights, I started to get aggravated every time we would go.
For the price you can’t beat it, ($4 per person, and they show you two movies. They are usually newly release movies that are showing in other theaters as well), but it just annoys me to go there now.
Ooh, do it! What’s showing?
