The New Hair Cut

At some point, I’m going to take really nice pictures of my new haircut. Right now, I have so much to do that taking pictures seems like a chore. I’ve got one picture ready but be warned, I’m not wearing any eye makeup or blush. The blush doesn’t matter but the eye makeup does. I feel naked without it. and I think my face looks naked without it. Anyway. I’ll post the picture at the end of this.

I had intended to have my nails done and then my hair. I stopped at the first salon on orders from Tammie. Unfortunately, they didn’t have an opening for me so I headed to Regis which was just around the corner.

As I’ve mentioned, I hate to get my hair cut because it’s curly and even some of the best stylists do not have a clue about curly hair. It’s different and anyone who says it isn’t should not be permitted near curly hair with scissors! This is why I spent a good 15 minutes speaking to the receptionist about my curly hair and why I was so afraid to get it cut. I then spent another 15 minutes with the very nice girl who was preparing to cut my hair. I explained my fear, my prior bad experiences, my hair, my tastes, etc.

Since it had been a few years since I’d had it cut and I didn’t want to lose a lot of length, I opted for a dep conditioning treatment. Very nice. And then the haircut. In order to keep the length but release the curls, I had long layers put in. The girl dried my hair a little and I was on my way. I liked it.

Next stop, nails. Scott did my fill and I must say, he was excellent! I had him cut them down quite a bit so I could type easier. Besides, I’m not really into the long nails anymore. These are not acrylics but gel and I really like them. They look so natural and the shine is really nice. I’m going to ask for Scott from now on.

Lloyd did my pedicure. That’s the first time I’ve had a man do my pedicure and he was quite good. I had my toes done in a bright orange. I love bold colors on my toes.

When I left there I headed to the bathroom before going to my car. That’s when it happened. I looked in the mirror and cried like a baby. My hair had dried into a freaking wedge! Do you remember Gilda Radner as Rosanna Rosannadanna from Saturday Night Live? Well, that’s what my hair looked like! UGH!!!!!

I started back toward Regis, then stopped. I wanted my hair right but I was too emotional to ask. I didn’t want to fall apart right there. I walked to the window and looked at some of the products. I started to walk away then turned and went in. I asked the new receptionist for a product to help my hair. She didn’t realize I’d just been there an hour before. I told her what had happened and she got another stylist to help me. Before I knew it, I had three girls trying to help me and the one who’d cut my hair initially had slipped out.

Eventually I was led back to one of the chairs and another stylists added more layers to my hair. She dry cut it, which is fine for curly hair. In fact, it’s best to dry cut curly hair especially if you don’t know what it will do as it dries. 15 minutes later my hair was under control, styled nicely and I was on my way home.

And people wonder why I hesitate to get my hair cut!

So now, here is the finished style. Two cuts, one wet, one dry. Which doesn’t look all that different than before because it’s just… curly. And boring. No eyeshadow or eyeliner or mascara so please ignore the naked face.

  • I once went in to get a hair cut at the end of the day. I had styled my hair straight that day and when the woman wet my hair down and realized it was curly/ wavy, she wouldn’t work on my hair. Another stylist had to come over and do the hair cut for her.

  • See, that wouldn’t bother me nearly as much as someone claiming they can cut curly hair when they can’t. At least that woman understood there were issues with curly hair. I think most people just don’t get it.

  • Don’t you have a regular stylist that you go to when you get your hair done? It took me years to find someone who I thought did a good job with my hair (which, by the way, isn’t exactly curly nor straight — it’s weird and wavy so it’s just as tricky to cut as curly hair, I’d say). It’s tough trusting your hair with someone else, but you gotta. And once you find a great stylist, never let them go! ;) Just my two cents for today.

By the way, you look radiant without make-up!

  • I used to; she lived down the street from me and she’d come to my house after work and do my hair. I loved her. But she moved away. So I’ve had issues every since.

My sister has hair like yours. Plus, hers grows weird, some sections faster than others. She found one guy who understood her hair. He died several years ago so she’s been cutting her own ever since.

  • I think you look pretty! You don’t need makeup, silly! My hair isn’t even curly and I know you should dry-cut curly hair. All those years of reading Seventeen magazine have paid off :)

  • Thanks, but I really prefer my face with globs of mascara. It’s the 70s in me. :)
