The Mind Of A Child

Believe it or not, I used to be a child. That’s right, I was a kid once and thought all those crazy kid things that grown ups giggle about.
A perfect example is the whole Mother’s Day/Father’s Day thing. My own parents played a horrible trick on me: my mom was born in May and my dad was born in June. Consequently, I spent several years with the notion that Mother’s Day was in May because that’s when all mothers were born and Father’s Day was in June because that’s when all father’s were born.
No, I didn’t think ahead to the day when I might become a mother with a November birthday. To my child’s mind it all made perfect sense.
Yesterday was not only Father’s day but also my dad’s birthday. He is now 84. I gave him a new wallet and as he began to empty out his old one, he noticed not one but two twenty dollar bills hidden between two photos. He gave my mom a quick glance and when he saw that she wasn’t paying attention to him, he looked at me, said, “shhh” and slid the wallet back into his pocket.
The funny thing is, my dad no longer drives so I’m not quite sure where he intends to spend that $40 that my mom won’t be there. Maybe he didn’t think that far ahead.
It’s been a while since my sisters and I were together for a family picture. Yesterday was a real treat. From left to right: My younger sister,Monette; Me; my dad; my youngest sister, Mary Beth; my mom.

That’s a great picture. I wish I had a family portrait of my parents and us. The last one of us, I was a young child
We don’t get to do that often so yes, it was a special thing.
