Music To My Ears

pianoWhen I was young, my mom bought a used piano and let me take lessons. My instructor was a friend of my dad who taught me as a favor. He played beautifully but I’m not sure if he had ever taught before. After about a year, the lessons stopped although I don’t remember why. I loved playing the piano but I don’t think I was very good. No, I take that back. I know I wasn’t very good.

Of course, that never stopped me from playing the piano every so often and it doesn’t stop me from wanting a piano now. I’ve mentioned to my husband several times that I’d like to find a used piano since we definitely have the room. He doesn’t usually respond to that suggestion so I figure one day he’ll come home from work and find a piano in the living room near the fireplace.

playpianoThat day may be here sooner than he thinks. I’ve just found a website that offers Free piano lessons email newsletter for adults on “Piano Chords & Chord Progressions”. I’m so excited that I may actually learn to play the piano now!

The lessons are emailed out in a newsletter every 5 days or so. There are 101 lessons in all. Imagine that! This isn’t just a month of email lessons; it’s an entire series of lessons developed by pianist Duane Shinn. It’s especially geared toward adults who want to learn piano but already have very busy lives. Hey! That’s me!

Although the lessons are free, and you’re under no obligation to purchase a single thing, you do have the option of buying a variety DVDs and CDs to help you progress even faster. Mr. Shinn is the author of over 500 books, CDs and DVDs on the subject of piano playing which would explain his knickname: pianoman.

This is such a wonderful opportunity to be taught by someone who plays so beautifully and has so much experience teaching as well. I’m just amazed that this is being offered for free.

I really need to scan the classifieds this weekend. With free lessons, there’s no reason not to invest in a piano for my living room.

  • You want mine? I DON’T have room for it, and could still come visit it!

  • Wait! You have a piano? How did I miss that?

I want a spinet for my foyer or in place of Boomer’s computer desk in the living room. I had no idea you had a piano. I need to pay attention.

  • Good luck in finding a used piano. You can probably find a great deal in the classifieds but be careful not to buy junk. Make sure that the soundboard (the board at the back of the piano) does not have huge cracks in it. I would also suggest hiring a piano tuner to “piano hunt” with you. Believe me, it’s not expensive and it’s a very worthwhile investment.

    Best wishes.

  • Found one! My wonderful next-door neighbor, Tammie, offered her piano to me. FREE! I have to agree to allow her to visit it whenever she wants but I figure now we’ll spend even more time drinking coffee together. It’s a win-win thing, for sure!
