From Online To Real Life

By Marisa | June 8, 2007

My kids don’t get it. My husband doesn’t get it. That doesn’t matter, though. My friends get it. My online friends who become my real life friends understand perfectly. We’re friends long before we actually see each other face to face. The cyber hugs we send each other are as real as the ones we share when we finally meet. You see, we touch each other’s hearts with our words; we open up to each other and share more than we do with most people we see every day. We connect. And we care.

This past week, Deb ventured out once again, from state to state, to turn her online friends into Real Life friends. I was blessed to be one of those friends. She made it here right around 3pm, just as she’d planned. We sat around my kitchen counter with Tammie and BJ from next door, eating Italian sausage sandwiches and talking about blogging, roller coasters, skin care and just about anything else that came up.

Me and DebIt’s interesting, even though I’m almost a decade older than Deb, I always felt like she was older because she’s so wise. She’s usually the voice of reason, her gentle words nudging me in the right direction. But in Real Life, Deb is young and bubbly. She has a beautiful smile and the happiest, lightest aura. She literally brightened my house when she walked in.

I’m also pleased to say that everyone in my family was on their best behavior for Deb. Maggie and Boomer did not fight and Kendyll did not climb on and fall from any furniture. Even Belle got a bath just so she could be part of the welcoming committee when Deb got here. Yessiree, Deb got to see this family at their very best. (If only I could get them to stay that way!)

Deb is in Cambridge, Ohio tonight, resting up for the last leg of her trip back to New Jersey. She may stop here for a quick bathroom break if she has time. That would be such a wonderful added treat. Either way, I’m so happy that Deb came through this way for her trip and I’m grateful for her friendship.

You know, my family may not have understood the friendships we’ve formed online or the sense of community and caring we have, but I think that after meeting Deb, they’re starting to get it. Finally.
