Last week, I stopped by the courthouse to renew the license on my Honda. We have the option of sending the payment in to the DMV in Charleston or bringing it to our county courthouse. It’s easier and quicker to stop at the courthouse since it’s on the way to just about anywhere I’m going.
Did I mention that we bought the Honda new in 2002 and just paid it off? Well, if you do the math you’ll know that this was the 5th year that we had to renew the license plate on the car. That’s five times that I walked into the tax department at the courthouse and paid for the $31 for the renewal. That’s also five times that the lady behind the desk looked up my personal taxes to make sure they’d been paid before I could renew the license.
This year they discovered that I’d not paid taxes on the Honda. Ever.
It turns out that the Honda never made it to our tax records. Upon further inspection, it seems to be due to the DMV misspelling our last name. The tax clerk seemed miffed at the ladies who should have caught the oversight the past four years. She let me know that it wasn’t my fault and she wasn’t going to make me pay 5 years worth of taxes on the car. Thank goodness! The two years I had to pay - just for that one car - was over $700. Oh, and get this. Next year the car will begin to appreciate in value! That’s right, there’s only a handful of cars that don’t continue to depreciate and mine is one. Great.
I love driving my Honda. It’s fun. But it’s also garaged for 8 months out of the year. I don’t know that it’s worth the cost of keeping it. Oh, what to do?

Wanna trade convertibles?!
If yours was a stick, I’d trade. I need a back seat!
I recently put my convertible up for sale, its a 2004 Jaguar XKR but it didn’t sell so i decided to keep it. The whether is great here at the moment so im glad i did.
That looks like a super fun car! I think it’s so interesting to find out more about other bloggers, i.e. what kind of cars they drive, what they like to do, and so on. Thanks for sharing!
You have to pay a yearly tax on a car? Cripes.
Yeah, our weather is getting better, too.
Yes, it is fun. If only we had warm weather year-round.
Yes we do. That’s crazy, isnt’ it? WV is a totally regressive state. Many municipalities even have a B&O tax which is assessed on the total sales with no adjustment for expenses.
And the Governor wonders why his slogan “Open For Business” didn’t attract any new business.
Eventhough I like S2000, I really like Audi (notice my nickname?
) I am thinking of buying a new Audi TT. 2.0T engine with 200bhp with lots of tuning opportunities.
Lots of nice cars out there. I’d like to trade my Malibu in on a mini cooper but my husband says no.
Taxes are miserable. You buy the car, pay taxes, drive the car, pay some more taxes, etc. How about taxed one time? Oh well. Good luck with your car.
