Drawn To Islands

By Marisa | March 29, 2007

It’s no secret that I’m fascinated with Islands. Having just returned from Hawaii, I’m feeling a little out of it here at home. I miss the calming waters and constant breeze.

I always feel most alive near water and being surrounded by it is just invigorating. Even Hilton Head, with all the tourists, made my heart dance! I’ve fallen in love with Kauai, Hawaii’s Garden Isle. I know there are other beautiful islands in the world and I want to see them all.

I’ve been researching locations and I’m impressed with the Greece Holidays, especially on Thassos, with it’s beautiful beaches and growing tourist trade. I really want to visit Ithaca because I remember how much I loved the small greek fishing village in Florida when I was a teen and I’d like to see how the ones there compare. I’d also like to see the monasteries on Ithaca after having heard my cousin talk about them after her last visit there. I love that you can reach it only by boat as it has no airport; that just makes it seem so much more secluded and safe.

I’m also looking into Syros since it’s one of the least commercialized of the Greek islands, which really appeals to me. It has an active Catholic population, too, which is unusual but will no doubt be an enriching experience for me.

I’ll always love Kauai but there are just so many islands in the world, each with their own special personality, that I just want to see and experience them all. And I’m happy that my husband is learning to love island living as much as I am. Rather than the mountains or the desert, I want us to vacation on an island, and Greece is a perfect choice for our next destination. I can’t wait!
