Is Lasik Right For Me?

I imagine I’m like quite a few people who wear glasses or contact lenses and really would like to have Lasik surgery. I wish my insurance would cover it but it doesn’t. So I research doctors and eye centers, trying to find a reasonable price. Not such a good idea, however.

According to a recent article in US News, Glenn Hagele, executive director of the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance, reminds us that the best technology can’t “make up for an inferior surgeon.” For this reason, I’m inclined to take the advice of my regular eye doctor and consult someone with the experience and expertise that will give me better odds of walking away with healthy eyes. I’ve already printed out the 50 Tough Questions For Your Lasik Doctor so I’ll have a head start on making the right choice.

I’m also considering PRK rather than Lasik. My understanding is that PRK has a longer recovery time but the long term results are far superior to Lasik. The first I heard of PRK was when a pilot friend explained that he’d had it because it was the only type of surgery that allowed him to retain his pilot’s license. The more I read about it, the more I think that the extended recovery time would be worth the better vision in the end.

I have a lot to think about and much studying to do before I make a decision. USAEyes.org is the best place to begin while I try to understand the various types of eye surgery and the use of lasers. From the easy-to-understand explanations of the various types of surgery to the doctor evaluations, this is really a one-stop reference site for anyone considering eye surgery for vision improvement.
