18 hours and counting

I smoked three cigarettes between 11:30 and midnight last night. Then I quit.

Today hasn’t been quite as difficult as I thought it would be. I’ve got my nicotine gum which I’m sure is easing the craving somewhat. I picked up some sugar free hard candies and those are helping, too. My hands, though, really miss having that cigarette soooooo…..

I found my daughter’s fake cigarette (it really looks like it’s lit and it used to blow smoke when you blew on it but that was a few years ago). I’ve been holding that in my hand. Several times, I flicked it. A few times, I put it to my lips. I know, it’s a crutch. I’m hoping that when the physical craving is gone, I won’t need that damn toy cigarette anymore.

So far, when the craving gets really bad I’ve had to just sit and pray. That seems to be working for me. I’m really surprised that other than a bit of nervous energy, I’ve been even tempered. I think the kids are most surprised, since they remember my last attempt to quit. (Not a good memory)

I’ve also decided that if something really stressful happens and I’m about to reach for a cigarette, I’m going to pull out my herbs and mix up a little lobelia, spearment, dandelion, etc. and roll a natural cigarette. Hopefully, by the time I get it rolled, I won’t want it anyway. But even if I do, it won’t be tobacco (and I believe lobelia can help ease the nicotine addiction).

But that’s just a back up plan in case I need it. So far I don’t.

Okay, now I need to pray. Writing about not smoking is making me want to smoke.

Damn.

  • Lobelia taken orally can ease cravings too. Try making a tea or even taking the capsules. Also black cohosh (and possibly blue cohosh too) are good for that.

  • Okay, a lobelia tea and a little spearmint, too, just because I like it. :)
That nicotine gum tastes really bad. Did you know that?

  • Yeah, it tastes like you scraped it off the underside of a table. It gave me the hiccups real bad too. Like, painful ones. Nothing like sitting in class with a bad case of nicotine-induced hiccups.

  • A lot of people say that they have had good luck with the nicotine patches. I know a woman who got hypnosis and it really worked for her.

I think you’re doing a wonderful thing by quitting, and I know you can do it. Just invest in lots of gum and know that every single second that goes by your body is becoming more and more healthy.

    Love you!
