So I won’t forget

For a very long time, I wanted to be a writer. I always knew that there was a story somewhere inside me, I just never knew what it was.

This morning, I got this idea. Well, actually, the idea has been jumping and bumping around in my brain for a while now but it never stood still long enough for me to understand it. It all became very clear today.

I’ve made some preliminary notes and I think I have a good idea of where I need to go with this. The real challenge, now, is finding the time to just sit down and start writing.

Writing is an interesting thing. I have to be in the mood, inspired, ready. I can’t just write at any time which probably explains why I don’t always post to my journal. Too often, I feel like writing when I’m nowhere near a keyboard or much too busy with other obligations.

I can’t just plan to sit down and write at a certain time. I might not be in the mood to write then. I can’t always just drop what I’m doing when I feel the inspiration to write.

So those are my excuses. But now that I have this idea maybe the inspiration and opportunity will come together so I can get started. If something doesn’t happen in the next week or so, I’ll have to read this post again and recommit myself to this idea.

Yep, that’s what I’ll do.

What Others Like You Have Said

  • Just try to get into the practice of writing a little bit every evening before you go to bed. I like to write too. It’s really nice to just get all of your thoughts out to the world. I used to want to be a novelist, but I am wayyyy too ADD for that. So now I just write lyrics and poems and letters to people that I will never send. My bad habit is throwing them away or burning them if I don’t like them later.

  • Yes, discipline. I think I’ll put my laptop next to my bed so I’ll be more motivated to write.

Don’t throw your writings away. I did that years ago and now I wish I had them. Some were really bad teenage lost-love stuff but I remember that some of the stuff I wrote was pretty good. Wish I’d saved it.

  • George Bernard Shaw used to lock himself in his room with nothing but his paper and writing implements. And I mean NOTHING. He would strip nekked and instruct his servants to take away his clothes and would say not to bring them back until he had written some good pages. Talk about motivation for overcoming writer’s block! I guess worked like this all the time.

  • Writing when you feel inspired is when your write the best, but it’s always good to write. My rule is this: Write. Write every day. That means re-writing, writing new material, or just taking down some notes from an idea (and that doesn’t mean you have to sit in front of a keyboard). Sometimes, just taking a couple of notes on paper is enough to keep you inspired.

I’ve been writing my book for a few years, now, and I don’t always feel like writing. My “day job” is to write – but it’s all technical work. My pleasure writing is taking the time to work on my book when the feelings get me. But I’m always writing, and that’s what’s important. You have to keep writing.

…and with our long history, I want to be one of the first to read what you have written. ;)

  • Apparently, GBS was not married to my husband. :) I can’t imagine getting a thing done if he knew I was locked in a room nekkid!
